Participants in the knitting group worked with a Brother KH-940 electronic knitting machine. They experimented with various ways to knit surfaces and defined certain parameters that have an effect on the density of the knitted surface.

The participants started with systematic explorations of the factors that effect the outcomes of the machine knitting process. They developed a notation to represent the knitting patterns and discovered that there are discrepancies between their representations and the actual knitted surfaces. This emergent behaviour of the string of yarns are further represented by the participants as shape rules with which they generated new surfaces and tested their shape representations' material coherence.
